Decorating an Apartment on a Budget

Carpe DiemI love shopping for home decor almost as much as I love shopping for clothes, so naturally when I moved into my new apartment, I went a little bonkers trying to immediately turn it into my perfect little space. While I’ve almost got everything the way I want it, there are still a few things I’ve yet to purchase, including a tv, more knickknacks (you can never have enough!!!) and lots of plants! I’ve never been known to have a green thumb, and I have never had many living plants in my apartment, but something about this particular space is just screaming for some greenery (maybe it’s because I’m getting later and later in my twenties…I don’t know). I’ve become especially obsessed with fiddle leaf fig trees, and plan on sticking one in my living room, as well as my bedroom.  Regardless of my apartment not being exactly the way I want it yet, I thought I would share what I have so far.

I am just starting a new job and didn’t have a whole lot of money to spend of my decor, so I utilized places like Target and Craigslist A LOT. You’d be surprised what kind of stuff you can find if you do your homework and spend the time looking online. Each piece of furniture in my living room was purchased for under $150!! The majority of my furniture and decor is from places like World Market, Pier 1, and Home Goods…HOWEVER, I found much of it on Craigslist for MUCH cheaper than it would have cost me if I were to have purchased in store. I have to say I got extremely lucky finding great pieces that were basically like brand new…and that is because I did my homework and was constantly checking updated listings. This awesome orange rug is originally from Pottery Barn, but I found it on Craigslist for $100.

Living Room Decor

Living Room

I wanted my living room to be light, feminine, and fun, but I also had the task of trying to disguise my sister’s couch (which is totally comfy, but not exactly the chicest of seating), as well as trying to hide the ugly fan in my living room window. I’m hoping it will be a bit more camouflaged once I get a plant for over by the window.

Coffee Table

Knickknacks

(I still need to put photos in my frames :-) )

Pier 1 Pillows

Bar cart

I love the idea of a bar cart!! I have all of these fun glasses but never use them because they are always hidden away in cupboards. With them out in the open, I’m hoping I’ll use them more!

World Market Chair

I love playing with different colors, textures, and patterns…

World Market Pillows

This chair and these pillows (moo) were all from World Market. I had seen this chair a few months back and loved it, and was ready to spend the $329 price tag, but as luck would have it, the day I moved into my new apartment I found it on Craigslist for $120 (You can imagine my utter joy).

Target Dishes

Target Plates

Homegoods

Target Glasses

Another thing I needed to buy when moving into this new apartment was new dishes. Previously I had been living with a collection of things I’d picked up over the years living with different friends and roommates, and it was about time I got a set of dishes (the main dishes I had been using were ones my mom bought me when I was a freshman in high school…she bought them thinking they would be good for when I was a freshman in COLLEGE…that was ten years ago.)

I love this bohemian set from Target (the solid plates are ceramic and the pretty patterned ones are plastic and make for great snaking plates!)! They remind me of something from Anthropologie, but for a fraction of the cost. I also can’t get enough of these glasses

Girly Bedroom

Hayworth Bed

Home Goods

I knew I wanted my bedroom to be a calm and relaxing space, with not a whole lot of color. My apartment has original hardwood and Spanish terra-cotta floors (which I love), and I think my bedroom decor plays into that theme nicely.

I found this gorgeous pillow at Home Goods, and it really became the starting point for the rest of the room. Soon after I found these two Moroccan mirrors (on sale!!!), which give the space a bit of interest and some height.

Turquoise Nightstand

As for the turquoise night stands…I found those on Craigslist years ago. This super-awesome chick named Chrissy has a company called Love Shack Designs where her and her husband refurbish furniture. Their customized headboards are the best!!

Hayworth Dresser

Home Goods Mirror

The majority of my bedroom furniture I bought last year, when I was obsessed with the entire Hayworth collection at Pier 1. It wasn’t exactly as cheap as Craigslist, so I’m slowly trying to make everything look a little less fussy, and a little more cool and calm. My bedroom isn’t exactly where I want it to be yet, but it’s getting there.

My overall goal is to make may apartment feel lived in. I want it to feel like my little escape from the big city…and hopefully I’m getting there.

My advice for decorating on a budget is to utilize places like Craigslist and flea markets (you can find some treasures!). Always pay attention to when stores are having sales, especially end of the season sales, and always sign up for a store’s rewards program (if it’s free). Finally, focus on the bigger picture and wait to get knickknacks and decorative pieces later (I sometimes have a hard time with this one…).

I hope you all enjoyed this home decor post…I promise to get back to fashion tomorrow! See you then!

It’s Friday!! So now that during the week my schedule looks something like this: 1 hour in traffic to get to work. Work until 6:30. Start second job (copywriting for Avenue K) until traffic dies down so I can get back to West Hollywood before midnight, Drive to the gym (it still takes me over an hour), go to the gym, get home around 8:45-9. Shower. Finish copywriting….AND then attempt to blog…I have been fairly exhausted, and the last thing I want to do during the week is go out after my long day. HOWEVER, it is Friday, and that means it’s time to get dressed up and have some fun!!

I’ve shared similar looks on my blog before, but I just love the look of leather with something extremely feminine. This top from Anthropologie is one of my favorites.

While I do plan on wearing this outfit this weekend, tonight I am actually off to the Dierks Bently concert at The Greek (which in my opinion is the best music venue in LA), and will be most definitely rocking my denim cutoffs and a pair of boots!! I’ll try to take some photos of my concert attire…I’m originally from a small town in CA, where we love our cowboys and country music…so tonight should be super fun!!

See you next week!!

Happy Hump Day, friends!! As some of you may know I just started my new job in Santa Monica. The building where I work is full of young, creative types, (which is so fun!) and I feel like work is the perfect opportunity to wear all of my clothes that I maybe wouldn’t wear during my lazy weekends.  I got these pants a few year ago from a Canadian company called, Joe Fresh. You can also find the brand at JCPenny, and they also had a pop-up shop on Melrose in Los Angeles (which is where I picked up these gorgeous printed trousers!).

For those of you not familiar with Joe Fresh, they are sort of like a Gap or J. Crew. All of the clothes are very classic, versatile, and easy to wear…which is why I was immediately drawn to the brand.

I love this look for work. It is fun and colorful, but still work appropriate (at least at my job). I’ve never been one to wear black pants and a button-up to work… I don’t think you should have to sacrifice your own style when you’re at the office. Even if you do have a stricter dress code than I do, you should always try and find ways to inject a little bit of your style into even the most ‘corporate’ of looks. I like to add a fun pair of earrings, or a statement necklace.

How do you spice up your workwear?

Happy Tuesday everyone!!! So today I want to talk about feeling confident in your clothes. I usually feel most confident when I am in a dressing room and I can try on whatever outfit I want. Sometimes I pick out some really wacky outfits that I would never want to be caught dead in. Other times I think to myself ‘this is cute…right?’ This is how I stumbled upon this metallic skirt from H&M. In the dressing room, I thought, “Ok, I can pull this off….maybe?!” Once I got home, I had the realization that I was actually going to have to wear this piece out in public, and the thought got me a little nervous!

Obviously I ended up keeping the piece because I really do love it, but it definitely makes me feel a tad self-conscious. I’ve paired it with a cute chambray top from Madewell in order to make the overall look more casual (and in this instance, I think it totally works!).

One thing I always have to remind myself is that if I like the way something looks (and it makes me happy), then I should go ahead and wear it!! Things that tend to make me a little self conscious include: hats, crazy bright patterns, and 1970’s inspired jumpsuits (which I think are totally adorable, but I have yet to find one I love)

Are there any pieces of clothing in your closet that make you think “I hope this looks ok, can I pull this off?!”

See you tomorrow!!

Wow! So much has happened in the last couple of weeks and I am so glad to be back online! In the last couple of weeks I have moved apartments and started my new job in Santa Monica. I’m finally beginning to feel like a big girl:-) I haven’t been doing a lot of clothes shopping in the month (most of my money has been going to getting things for my new apartment), however I did pick up this really cute summer dress from Urban Outfitters. I was drawn to the easy silhouette and feminine neckline.

Just a heads up, stores are having their crazy summer sales right now…so if you’re looking to shop, try places like Zara, Topshop, and Gap. All of them have awesome sale sections, and you can usually score some really great end of the season pieces.

I’m really excited about this week’s outfits, and am so glad to be back online!!

Until tomorrow…

As you are probably very well aware by now, I love wearing short summer dresses, and this one is about as short as it gets…haha.  When wearing something this short, I try to stick with a flat or mid-heeled sandal. I always say that if you are going to accentuate one area of your body, you should keep the rest somewhat covered. I love the high neckline on this dress; the combination of the short hem, and neckline give the look a sort of retro vibe.

It’s been extremely hot in LA recently, but  if it weren’t for the heat, I would throw a denim jacket over this look to finish everything off.

I start my new job next week, so I hope I will be able to continue the daily posts…I’ll have to start posting work-appropriate outfits:-)

Happy Thursday!

I couldn’t not post an outfit centered around the “Little White Dress”. These white/ivory lace dresses have been extremely popular over the last few seasons, and I think they are a lovely summer dress option. I particularly love the scalloped hem on this H&M dress.

…And can we talk about these shoes?? These aren’t what I would typically go for. They are bordering on the “overwhelming” side, and I tend to go for more minimalist designs on my feet, but something about these screamed “tan legs and summer holiday” to me…don’t ya think?

I’m back on this super hot Monday!! I landed a new job and moved into my new apartment, so last week was hectic, to say the least! LA has been scorching the last few days, so I’ve opted for this lightweight maxi dress from O’Neil. To complete this boho-inspired look, I’ve pair it with my favorite slider sandals that I recently purchased ON SALE at Urban Outfitters.

BE WARNED: While I do love these shoes, they aren’t the most comfortable. The leather is really stiff and causes blisters….I’m still working on breaking them in.

Finally, my gorgeous embossed leather wristlet and earrings are from this awesome company called, Lovely Hunt. They make handcrafted bags, jewelry and home decor, as well as sell some really cool vintage pieces. I am beyond obsessed with this pair of earrings…I love that they make a statement, but are still really delicate, and best of all, they are super lightweight.

Until tomorrow…

Summer is officially in full swing, my friends, and I, for one, couldn’t be more excited!!! The above outfit would be perfect for a summer BBQ with friends. I might even use the chambray top as a layering piece and have a swimsuit top underneath.  If you haven’t heard, eyelet is all the rage this season, and these shorts from Gap are one of my favorite ways to wear the trend. They are lightweight and give the entire outfit a crisp, summery feel.

I am in the process of moving, and cannot wait to share my new apartment photos!! I’m thinking I may start posting pictures of home decor….what do you guys think??

Happy Friday!! This is DAY 2 of my Forth of July inspired outfits, and the beginning of “STRIPE MADNESS”. This navy and white striped dress from the Gap is such a classic, and a staple in my wardrobe. It’s super comfy and casual, but it looks like I made an effort. It’s also very versatile in that you can dress it up with heels, or chuck on your favorite flat sandals.

Another thing I love to do is change up the look of my bags by adding a fun pop of color by tying a scarf around the handle. I love this one from Moschino Cheap and Chic, and thought the red color tied everything together nicely.

I hope everyone has a great weekend! I will be moving over the next few days and cannot wait to share pictures of my new place!

See you next week!
